RICK WARREN – Man Of Valor

Dr. Rick Warren is passionate about attacking what he calls the five “Global Goliaths” – spiritual emptiness, egocentric leadership, extreme poverty, pandemic disease, and illiteracy/poor education. His goal is a second Reformation by restoring responsibility in people, credibility in churches, and civility in culture. He is a pastor, global strategist, theologian, and philanthropist.

As a pastor, Rick Warren founded Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., in 1980 with one family. Today, it is an evangelical congregation averaging 30,000 weekly attendees, and has more than 300 community ministries to groups such as prisoners, CEOs, addicts, single parents, and those with HIV/AIDS. Recently, the church fed 42,000 homeless people – three meals a day – for 40 days.

He also leads the Purpose Driven Network of churches, a global coalition of congregations in 162 countries. More than 400,000 ministers and priests have been trained worldwide, and almost 157,000 church leaders subscribe to the Ministry ToolBox, his weekly newsletter. His previous book, The Purpose Driven Church is listed in “100 Christian Books That Changed the 20th Century.” Forbes magazine called it “the best book on entrepreneurship, management, and leadership in print.”

As a global strategist, Dr. Rick Warren advises leaders in the public, private, and faith sectors on leadership development, poverty, health, education, and faith in culture. He has been invited to speak at the United Nations, the World Economic Forum in Davos, the African Union, the Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, TIME’s Global Health Summit, and numerous congresses around the world. TIME magazine named him one of “15 World Leaders Who Mattered Most in 2004” and in 2005 one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Also, in 2005 U.S. News & World Report named him one of “America’s 25 Best Leaders.”

To the delight of some and the consternation of others, bestselling author and pastor of the Saddleback community mega church, Rick Warren is endorsing closer union between Evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics.

Just last month Warren was invited to speak at a Vatican conference on the complementarity of men and women, where Warren notoriously referred to Pope Francis as the “Holy Father.”

Now, in a two-minute video released by Catholic News Service, Warren has said flatly: “We have far more in common than what divides us. When you talk about Pentecostals, charismatics, evangelicals, fundamentalists, Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, on and on and on and on.”

“Well they would all say we believe in the trinity, we believe in the Bible, we believe in the resurrection, we believe salvation is through Jesus Christ. These are the big issues,” he said.

Rick Warren on Marriage

“There is always a danger in being the 28th speaker in a conference,” said Rick Warren during his speech today at Pope Francis’s marriage conference. “What’s left to say?”

Apparently plenty, as Warren’s speech—which he said he wrote from scratch the night before after yesterday’s speakers covered his previously prepared main points—was “probably the first time ever the synod hall resembled a revivalist meeting,” tweeted David Quinn, an Irish Catholic columnist. The Saddleback Church senior pastor reportedly received a standing ovation following his remarks defending marriage between a man and a woman.

“As Christians we seem to be known more for what we’re against than what we’re for. I want to change that,” said Warren. According to his prepared remarks obtained by CT, he explored why Hebrews 13:4 commands that “marriage is to be honored by everyone” and laid out an “action plan” for conference attendees. In true evangelical form, his eight steps are in mostly alphabetical order:

Affirm the authority of God’s word
Believe what Jesus taught about marriage
Celebrate healthy marriages
Develop small group courses to support marriage
Engage every media to promote marriage
Face attackers with joy and winsomeness
Give people confidence
Teach the purposes of marriage

Bishop TD Jakes pointed out that his own church, the Potter’s House is composed of almost fifty percent men. “Here is what I know,” he said. “I don’t know where all the men came from in our church. They’ve always been there, and the key is engaging them with something that is relevant and challenging to their lives and hearts. If you get church out of the utopia that so many want to create and get it down to the functional level where men live out their daily lives, they will come. They will begin to see q quantifiable result in their lives and they will come. They’ll want to be in church. But if you’re just going to lay on the floor for a half and hour and speak in tongues forget about it. Men get lost in real strong emotionalism.

“As a pastor I have to present the gospel to men in such a way that it is provocative and challenging to them. We can’t allow the idiosyncrasies and weaknesses in men become the focus, because then we will just be trying to scale fish we haven’t caught.”

He takes his sweet time. Bishop T.D. Jakes is in the 10th minute of a marathon sermon to 22,500 men in the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. Today’s text is Genesis 1, in which God, famously, talks to himself. Jakes, a large man dressed in an eye-catching beige leisure ensemble, appears to be doing the same. He is strolling meditatively across the stage, his baritone voice set at low rumble, and his thoughts at first seem so loose and free-associative that he cannot make it through a seven-word divine utterance. “And God said, ‘Let us. Let usssssss…'” says Jakes,

During his interview with JET Magazine, Bishop T.D. Jakes opened up about the infamous moment at the beginning of September, when Tyler Perry laid hands on him the Sunday morning following Mega fest.

“When you start talking about prayer, no one is exempt from the need of it,” Jakes explained. “It doesn’t matter who it comes from as long as it comes from a place of purity.”
